Read Slowly, Mindfully, and Carefully…
Two Saturdays ago, we had a powerful training session at CAMP, where Mr. Gabriel Balogun delivered massive value in just three hours.
Of the many insights shared in that interactive session, one that stood out to me was how he linked our core values, mindset, and beliefs so seamlessly:
"Your core values reflect your mindset on certain things, and your mindset is shaped by your beliefs. In essence, whatever you believe—whether true or not—determines your mental framework, how you think, and how you see the world. Your mindset then influences how you live and the values you hold dear."
Amazing, right?
I pondered on this for a while and realized something profound:
The only way to take charge of your mindset (which is the bridge between your values and beliefs) is to first know what you truly believe in.
But here’s the real challenge—most people don’t actually know what they believe. They unconsciously build a mindset that dictates how they live without ever questioning its foundation.
For example, Imagine a woman who believes that "men are evil."
She develops a mindset that makes her repel men, no matter how genuine or valuable they are.
Her values then revolve around feminism, girl power, or even misogyny.
Or take someone who believes that "money is hard to make."
His mindset is locked on hustle, grind, sweat, and struggle. He doesn’t see ease, smart work, or efficiency—only hardship.
His values revolve around HARD work, and he sees white-collar jobs as shortcuts to success that aren’t sustainable.
See the pattern? Beliefs → Mindset → Values → Lifestyle.
The Bigger Problem
While limiting beliefs are a problem, there’s an even bigger issue:
Most people don’t even know what their beliefs are.
Our beliefs are shaped by experiences, environments, and events—many of which were outside our control. So if you’ve never examined them, how can you tell which beliefs are serving you and which are limiting you?
If you don’t know what you believe, how do you:
- Identify which beliefs are empowering or destructive?
- Build a mindset that works in your favor?
- Cultivate a value system that supports your growth?
This is more common than you think. Most people can’t confidently say, “These are the beliefs that shape my life.” But here’s the good news—there’s a way out.
How to Take Charge of Your Beliefs
Three things:
- Self-Awareness
- Reflection
- Journaling
1. Self-Awareness
You can’t change what you don’t recognize. To understand your beliefs, you first need to be self-aware.
2. Reflection
How do you become self-aware? Through deep reflection. Ask yourself:
- What experiences shaped the way I think?
- Where was I five years ago, and how has my mindset changed?
- What decisions have I made based on beliefs I never questioned?
Reflection is your personal mirror. It helps you make sense of your thoughts, behaviors, and values.
3. Journaling
My best tool for reflection? Journaling.
Writing down your thoughts is like turning the mess in your mind into a message. It forces you to:
- Organize your emotions.
- Question your beliefs.
- Track patterns in your thinking.
But here’s the catch—you must be brutally honest with yourself.
What really happened?
How do you truly feel about it?
What emotions did it trigger?
Journaling is like a personal therapy session on paper—and over time, it becomes a catalyst for deep personal transformation.
Your Takeaways
- Most people don’t know what they truly believe—so don’t be too hard on yourself.
- Most people aren’t honest with themselves—so they live below their potential.
- To understand your beliefs, you must become more self-aware.
- To become more self-aware, you must reflect mindfully.
- Journaling is a powerful way to engage with your thoughts and emotions.
- Real transformation takes time—believe in your growth journey.
Now, a Simple Exercise
"What are your beliefs about food?"
Pause. Reflect. Be honest with yourself.
Don’t rush through it. Let the answers come to you naturally.
I hope this gave you a glimpse of clarity.
Till next time,
Gee
